Fronted by vocalist and songwriter Lukas Graham Forchhammer, the band’s next single ‘Mama Said’ impacts July 1st. Taken from their self-titled UK debut album which entered the charts at #2, ‘Mama Said’ is a bright and upbeat concoction of soulful vocals, flourishes of piano and insistent beats with a striking refrain that’s memorably assisted with the help of a children’s choir. A flashback to Graham’s childhood, ‘Mama Said’ shares the storytelling narrative style that helped to make ‘7 Years’ such a crossover hit.
‘Mama Said’ has already been by a huge audience with 72 million plays at Spotify and over 25 million views of its official video.
“One time, the kids in school made fun of me because I was wearing the wrong jeans,” he explains in reference to the song. “I bought them with my own money, and I was so proud. My mum said, ‘Don’t listen to those rich kids. We’ve got a bed and food. Imagine how many children don’t have that.’ My dad told me, ‘You’re going to be laughing at them one day, but don’t point back. Don’t get even or mad. Keep walking and smiling.’ I never want to lose sight of my roots. I know where I’m from. I’m also not going to forget where I’m going.”
Lukas Graham’s album spent three weeks in the Top 10 after debuting at #2 and continues to sell strongly. The majority of the album focuses on Lukas Graham’s emotionally honest lyrics and in particular remembering his father, as Lukas turned to his writing as a means to cope with and understand that loss. The result is eleven tracks filled with emotion, powered by Lukas’s soulful vocals, piano-orientated pop melodies and flourishes of horns and strings – all with his engaging and heartfelt lyrics at the core.
