After offering the first taste of their music with the TAPE EP last year, Canada’s CHASTITY are back with the announcement of their official signing to Last Gang Records and the release of PEROXIDE, their first single for the label. In contrast to the TAPE EP, the new single delves into a deeper, more ethereal space whilst staying true to their core of youth culture.

From the suburbs of Whitby, Ontario, CHASTITY are the brainchild of singer-songwriter BRANDON WILLIAMS. After releasing the TAPE EP last year, and sharing stages with the likes of Chelsea Wolfe, Dilly Dally and No Joy, CHASTITY have traded their distorted guitars for maudlin strings on PEROXIDE.
Through simple yet striking and reverberating piano chords, Williams’ voice wavers as if on the edge of breaking. “You still talk to God in your sleep,” he sings, evoking the familiar hollow feeling after the loss of a loved one; later, he declares solemnly over the crescendo of rumbling drums and the hum of violins, “It’s just peroxide; it’s just the sunlight in your eyes”. The stunning video reflects these sentiments further.
“There’s a death of self that comes with love,” says Brandon Williams. “The song is about dying, loving; I think a lot of my writing is.”
The Canadian suburbs are dizzying and confusing. Whitby, Ontario has its trailer parks; it also has its luxury cars, and this juxtaposition is reflected in CHASTITY. Their music is both melodic and chaotic, borne from the boredom of their surroundings; and emerging now into a youth culture in Canada for a generation without culture.
The debut CHASTITY album will follow later this year. In the meantime, the PEROXIDE single and the TAPE EP offer different takes on a songwriter and a band that refuse to be restricted by expectation or genre; and refuse to do what they’re told.
